The index is a searchable document of access points to client information, institution names and dates of birth and dates of death (if available) contained in series number NTRS 3755. A reference copy is available in NTRS 3764.

Function / Content

This series consists of master copy of an index to administration files and client files of the Welfare Branch and Social Development Branch in the Department of the Northern Territory, registered during 1959-1978. Individual client files were maintained, including: Aboriginal people declared to be Wards under the Wards Ordinance; emergency assistance to single men, deserted wives or widows, and pensioners; foster and/or adoption arrangements for child clients; guardianship of adults and children and arrangements for out of home care or institutionalisation; and client complaints and/or enquiries. Some files registered during 1974-1976 relate to services provided to survivors of Cyclone Tracy, and refugees from Timor and Vietnam. Administration files relate to subjects such as: investigation of offences under, or breaches of, the Wards Ordinance; the inspection, investigation of complaints, and registration of, child minding centres; correspondence associated with budget estimates and economic data, staff salary and conditions; legislation from the Northern Territory and other jurisdictions; correspondence with other government departments; regional grants; and, returns from institutions including child welfare homes, and prisons and gaols. The index consists of 39 fields containing the following information: box number; file number; file title; date range of file; name of adult client; alternative client names( e.g. alternative spellings, aliases); other adult client names referred to in reports/investigations on file; adult client name if different from primary client; name and location of welfare institution where adult was placed; name and location of other institution where adult was placed; date or year of birth; sex of client; Aboriginal, Non-Aboriginal or not specified; birth mother name; birth father name; sibling names; spouse name; children of client (not adopted); children of client (adopted) and jurisdiction of adoption; name of child clients; a
